An introduction to ACD Unlimited Drum Pedal Hardware ...

Optimum Kick Drum Pedal and Hi-Hat Pedal Hardware Designs - These promote maximum development of Foot & Limb technique.

As virtuosodrummer.com maintains it’s primary intention to promote the highest technical achievements possible for set drumming, we are compelled to recommend drum hardware that accommodates these goals.

Regarding the development of foot motions conducive to greatest efficiency, power transfer and speed:

  • The heel plate is a legacy design that serves no modern purpose as the heel of the foot is active in fully implemented foot motion technique.
  • The foot’s heel must be able to contact with the moving surface of the footboard.
  • Textured kick board surfaces are a detriment to push-pull and sweep stroke foot motion.
  • The foot must be able to slide forward and backward on the board’s surface smoothly.
  • A wider pedal surface is preferable to a narrow design.
  • The foot’s ability to maintain contact with the pedalboard surface needs to be effortless.
  • There are definite technical advantages when the kick and hi-hat pedalboard surfaces possess matching form factors.
  • Heavy-duty, robust design construction is far preferable to anything less.

These issues addressed, it is interesting to note that only a few manufacturers offer longboards for kick drum. Only four companies offer a corresponding design for the hi-hat. Of these, only ACD Unlimited makes kick drum and hi-hat longboards as well as a longboard hi-hat remote product.

Images below show examples of the longboard products from ACD Unlimited (Customized Drum Solutions manufactured in Austria).

The longboard kick drum pedal has a smooth playing surface and the absence of a heel plate This design incorporates direct drive and micro bearings. The pedal’s form factor is consistent with the hi-hat hardware products.

The longboard hi-hat stand pedal has a smooth playing surface and the absence of a heel plate. This design incorporates direct drive and micro bearings. The pedal’s form factor is a matching complement to the kick drum pedal’s form factor.

The longboard hi-hat cable remote pedal has a smooth playing surface and the absence of a heel plate. This design incorporates direct drive and micro bearings. This pedal shares the same form factor as the other two hardware offerings from ACD Unlimited.

A virtuosodrummer.com image of a symmetrical drumset with longboard kick drum pedals and matching longboard hi-hat pedals inc. remote hi-hat cable drives. The foot pedal hardware is made by TRICK Drums USA.
As an example:
In the photo, note the use of mirrored kick pedals in the center and hi-hat remotes on the outside. As with all remote hi-hat controllers, the TRICK longboard hi-hat remotes (now discontinued) allowed for the cable to extend away from the front of the assembly at any angle within 180 degrees.

The Darwin HiHat Remote assemblies from ACD Unlimited employ greatly refined engineering and go well beyond capabilities with the hardware seen above.

Of note is the uniformity of playing surface regardless of the drum instrument being controlled.

Of necessity for maximum utilization of foot and leg technique is the smooth playing surface, long footboard length and the elimination of the heel plate.
